In this issue of U.S. 1 we turn to a frequent freelance contributor, Doug Dixon, to untangle the complex choices offered by “triple play” bundles of phone, Internet, and cable TV. Dixon digs behind the information on the companies’ websites for his guide on whether to choose Comcast or Verizon.
The article starting on page 41 is unusual in that it does not quote experts. But the author himself is the expert. Dixon, a graduate of Brown, was a product manager and software developer at Intel and Sarnoff. He is now editor-in-chief of IRMA’s Mediaware magazine and east coast technical editor for Camcorder & Computer Video magazine.
As an independent technology consultant, Dixon has written four books, published more than 250 feature articles, and presented 80 seminars and talks, all available on his website and blog (www.manifest-tech.com). His most recent comments were on how to extract flash video segments from YouTube.
For nearly a decade Dixon has also written U.S. 1’s holiday gift guides focussed on the latest technology gadgets. Not surprisingly Dixon will discuss holiday gadget gifts for the Tuesday Technology Talk at Princeton Public Library on Tuesday, November 6, at 7 p.m.
Dixon was vacationing when we went to press, but he promises to return in time for the Princeton Chamber Trade Fair on Friday, September 7. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and early birds may glimpse U.S. 1’s photographer, Craig Terry, who will be there to take candids just after the ribbon cutting. Working on what might have been a dare-devil bet with U.S. 1’s Richard K. Rein, Ed Keenan of Document Depot will slice those photos into a special issue, distributed three hours later at the chamber lunch.
So if you are an early bird, look for your picture in the same-day paper. Be sure to bring a business card. The beer tasting starts at 3, and the booths stay open until 4 p.m. A breakdown party, featuring the trio that made such a hit last year, Thursday Night Jazz, runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Thanks for the article on hiking in New Jersey (August 22). I would like to add an additional resource: Adventures for Women (www.adventuresforwomen.org/).
This club, operated out of Morristown, New Jersey, runs hikes, backpacking trips, biking trips, city paths (exploring cities that are close by), and kayaking/canoeing trips for all levels. It provides an excellent opportunity for women to increase their skills in a supportive environment and meet other women with similar interests. I have been a member for many years now and have made many wonderful friends and hiking companions.
