A New Term for Lang

The Institute for Advanced Study’s Lee Sandberg contacted U.S. 1 to note a correction to Elaine Strauss’ January 30 article “Guest Artist Phan Follows Musical Pattern at IAS.

Strauss had written that IAS artist-in-residence David Lang had reached the end of his three-year residency and was ending his IAS engagement. While IAS residencies have a three-year term, Lang’s residency has been renewed for an additional three years

We are happy to make the correction to share that fact and to put a spotlight the artistry that Lang brings to the IAS and the region.

In a 2017 article Strauss wrote that Lang is a composer who “shuns labels. He has no use for a battery of musical categories. Lang recognizes no musical boundaries. He prefers exploring and experimenting. His compositions have ranged from solo pieces for a single professional musician to a piece where 1,000 singers, including amateurs, mingled with an audience of 2,000 in New York’s Lincoln Center plaza. Lang’s poignant 2007 composition ‘the little match girl passion’ won a Pulitzer Prize.

Lang’s interests and appreciation of other innovative musicians has been reflected by his selections of free concerts at the Institute, including the next event on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9. That will be when film and theater actor Paul Lazar presents innovative American composer John Cage’s revolutionary lecture “Indeterminacy.” He will be accompanied by the Brooklyn-based Sandbox Percussion performing Cage’s equally revolutionary percussive music.
