A trio of former executives at Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic has formed J.A. Churchill Associates, a firm providing management and consulting to nonprofits and philanthropies.
The firm is led by John Churchill, a former senior vice president of operations at the Roszel Road-based RFB&D, and was co-founded by Jennifer Moreland and Julia Freedman, who also served as vice presidents there.
According to Churchill, the firm provides consulting, program development, change management, staffing, and other services to “generate greater social and financial returns” from grant makers. It also concentrates on initiatives to support women and children, disaster mitigation, literacy and learning programs, health care, education, and disability services.
The firm’s recent actions include developing digital material for children’s museums and a volunteer program called Read It Forward through Bookshare, both to promote child literacy.
Churchill is a 25-year veteran of the nonprofit world. At RFB&D he oversaw the production, storage, and distribution of more than 250,000 audiobooks every year. He also oversaw new business development and a 7,000-strong volunteer brigade in 29 recording studios.
Churchill also lead RFB&D’s march into the digital age, overseeing the organization’s conversion to an all-digital environment. This, he says, doubled manufacturing capacity and saved RFB&D $3.5 million.
He earned his bachelor’s in business administration from William Paterson College and has studied industrial engineering at the College of New Jersey. He also is on the board of Halberd Match Corporation, a Ewing-based company that develops and markets proprietary imaging and biometric technologies.
Moreland, who was born in Jamaica and who earned her bachelor’s in chemistry from Swarthmore College, formerly served as vice president of sales and marketing at RFB&D. Before that she spent more than 30 years at Johnson & Johnson, ending her tenure there as executive director of the firm’s strategic customer group. That group developed customer-centered marketing strategies for pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
She also served as a corporate account director for J&J Managed Care. She began her career as a clinical research assistant at McNeil Pharmaceutical.
Freedman is a former senior vice president responsible for RFB&D’s strategic business plan. Like Morland, Freedman is also a longtime veteran of Johnson & Johnson, where she worked for 25 years and served as executive director of corporate contributions and worldwide community relations and for the company’s Pediatric Institute. Like Churchill, she sits on the board of Halberd Match Corporation. She earned her bachelor’s in psychology from Washington State University.
According to RFB&D, the exodus of the three longtime workers was due to a restructuring.
