Everything from cars to heart monitors are now connected to the Internet. The proliferation of the “Internet of Things” has its potential benefits, but also risks: what if someone hacks that heart monitor?
On Thursday, June 8, the Cybersecurity Center at Kean University and the Union County Small Business Development Center will co-host the Internet of Things, a seminar exploring the vast array of networked devices that surround us and the associated risks, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. David Weinstein, New Jersey’s first chief technology officer, will deliver the keynote address at the event.
“Small businesses use technology to increase productivity and capabilities. Just imagine how losing control over these necessities can set them back,” said David Margulies, director of the Union County SBDC at Kean University. “We all need to be well versed on how to best mitigate this risk to ensure business continuity.”
The Internet of Things refers to the diverse array of networked devices, ranging from cars and kitchen appliances to heart monitors, able to collect and exchange data through embedded sensors. The seminar will explore potential risks the IoT poses to small businesses and best practices for securing networked devices.
