Silvana Clark was appointed head of school at Princeton Junior School by the board of trustees in April.
Clark will be the school’s third head, replacing Peter Rapelye upon his retirement in June after serving as headmaster for seven years. Clark’s appointment is for the 2012-’13 school year.
Clark, a Princeton native, is currently an educational consultant with Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, responsible for curriculum, assessment, and professional development.
She is the former dean of faculty of Sheridan School in Washington, D.C., and has more than 20 years experience as an educator, researcher, consultant, and leader. Clark earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Princeton Junior School is an independent school for children ages two through the fifth grade. The school is situated on seven acres near the intersection of the Route 206 and Fackler Road in Lawrenceville.

Robert L. Barchi has been named the 20th president of Rutgers University, effective September 1. He was also named a professor at the university with academic tenure.
Barchi currently is president of Thomas Jefferson University and previously served as provost of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was chief academic officer with oversight of the university’s schools, athletic and academic programs, and students and faculty.
Born in Philadelphia, Barchi earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified as a specialist in neurology.
Barchi succeeds Richard McCormick, president since 2002, who is retiring this summer.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) has named Mary Emerson as the school’s new executive director. She succeeds Irene Bald Romano in the position.
The school is the U.S. headquarters for the research center in Athens, Greece, for post-graduate study in the classics and archaeology.
Emerson was previously associate director of development at the Frick Collection in New York. She was also executive director of the American Friends of Winchester College, and has held positions at the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science, the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Hewitt School.
Founded in 1881, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens oversees research devoted to the advanced study of all aspects of Greek culture from prehistory to the present day.
By agreement with the Greek government, the school serves as liaison with the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism on behalf of North American students and scholars for the acquisition of permits to conduct archaeological work and to study museum collections.

CytoSorbents of Deer Park Drive has established a wholly owned European subsidiary, CytoSorbents Europe GmbH, with offices in Berlin, Germany.
The subsidiary will manage distribution, sales and marketing, and customer support throughout Germany and other European countries.
Earlier this year, the company signed a purchase agreement for the sale of up to $8.5 million of its common stock to Lincoln Park Capital Fund, of Chicago.
CytoSorbents, a therapeutic device company that uses blood purification to treat life-threatening illnesses, said the proceeds from the sale would be used in part to fund commercialization of CytoSorb — its flagship product — in Europe.
“Setting up our European subsidiary with a physical office in Germany represents a key step and commitment towards the commercialization of CytoSorb in the European Union,” says CEO Phillip Chan.
“This base of operations will enable us to be close to and support interactions with customers and businesses in real-time, and will provide a central location for our sales and marketing efforts,” Chan says.
According to the company, CytoSorb has demonstrated statistically significant reductions in mortality in septic patients at high risk of death and is now available for sale in Germany for the treatment of critical care illnesses under a controlled market release.
A broad product launch in Germany and availability in other European Union countries are anticipated during the first half of 2012, assuming the availability of funding, and continued positive results from clinical studies.
