#b#PSEG Closes Hamilton Coal Plant#/b#
An era has come to an end, as PSEG has closed its coal-burning Mercer Generating Station on Lamberton Road by the Delaware River in Hamilton. The company said it closed Mercer, along with a Hudson plant, because natural gas was so cheap that it no longer made sense to run coal plants. The two were the last of the company’s coal-burning plants in New Jersey, although two other plants in South Jersey, operated by other companies, still run on coal.
The 57-year-old power station, located on 130 acres in the Bordentown Marsh, ran for only two days in January. Some of the 200 employees who work at the Mercer and Hudson plants were transferred to other positions, while others took buyout packages to retire.

Mary Fitz Randolph “Randy” Hobler, 94, on May 26. She was the co-author together with Jeanne Silvester of “Princeton Trivia,” “On the Streets Where We Live,” and “On the Streets Revisited,” and many historical articles. She was a founder of Youth Employment Services in Princeton, and her husband, Herbert Hobler, founded the Nassau Broadcasting Company.
