Drugmaker Advaxis has partnered with Biocon, an Asian biotech company, to deliver cervical cancer drugs to India. The agreement between the two companies allows Biocon to commercialize and distribute an anti-cancer drug developed by Advaxis.
Under the agreement, Advaxis will manufacture ADXS-HPV. According to the company, tests have shown the drug to be about as effective as current chemotherapy drugs, with fewer side effects than chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Advaxis’ line of anti-cancer drugs is based on genetically engineered bacteria designed to redirect the human immune system to attack cancer cells. ADXS-HPV is the company’s first commercial product. It is currently in clinical trials for use in America and Europe as well as India, though it has yet to be approved anywhere. The deal with Biocon represents an attempt by Advaxis to sell its product in the fast-growing Asian market, where preventive care that might stave off cervical cancer is not widely available. According to the World Health Organization, there are about 134,000 new cases of cervical cancer in India every year, of which about 73,000 women die. In the United States, in 2008, an estimated 11,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer, and there were an estimated 3,870 deaths.
According to Advaxis CEO Daniel J. O’Connor, Biocon was interested in distributing Advaxis’ drug because of the higher rates of cervical cancer in the developing world.
