The conservative political advocacy group Americans for Prosperity likes to quote the late economist Milton Friedman’s assertion that “there’s no such thing as a free lunch,” meaning that “government handouts” always come at an economic price. However, supporters of the anti-tax group can get a free dinner by attending the grand opening of the Americans for Prosperity headquarters at 4105 Route 1 South in Monmouth Junction on Monday, August 26, from 6 to 8 p.m.
While New Jersey is a solidly blue state, and experts say Democrat Cory Booker likely has the upper hand in the race against the former AFP chairman Steve Lonegan for the Senate seat formerly occupied by the late Frank Lautenberg, the AFP is establishing red outposts in Democratic territory.
The new AFP office is one of three the group is opening in the state this week, along with locations in Cherry Hill and Northfield. People who attend the field office openings can enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream courtesy of the group credited with helping send numerous Tea Party candidates to congress in 2010. AFP’s deputy director, Daryn Iwicki, will be on hand for the ceremony.
According to a statement by the group, then office will serve as a hub and call center. The group’s main headquarters is in Arlington, Virginia, with its New Jersey headquarters in Bogota — the town where Lonegan served as mayor from 1995 to 2007.
