Maestro Technologies, an IT consulting company, has bought the 78,000-square-foot former Wells Fargo building at 1 West State Street in Trenton and has moved its headquarters there from Edison.
Maestro CEO Kamal Bathla said the company plans to lease additional space in the building to other businesses, and also wanted to collaborate with Mercer County Community College to provide paid internships and job training to students. Bathla calls the headquarters an “innovation hub,” and invited other companies to join its “SMART Applications Innovation Center.”
“Our group will leverage our experiences and network to support start up, small and mid-size businesses in Trenton and the surrounding communities,” Bathla said in a statement.
Maestro is a big data company that specializes in business analysis, account management, and web security. It received a $17 million tax credit to choose the site over a rival Wilmington, Delaware, location. In return the company pledged to invest $1.7 million, retain 35 jobs, and create 143 new ones over the next 18 months.
The building at 1 West State Street was home to Wells Fargo Bank and the state Schools Development Authority until 2013 when both moved out. The building was constructed in 1930 as a bank and boasts striking neoclassical architecture. It is located on a historic corner in downtown Trenton where there was once a tavern frequented by George Washington.

Robert J. Barrett, 77, on October 27. He was a district manager for Wyeth Laboratories and a realtor in Mercer County. He also served on the Hamilton Township school board and the boards of many other organizations.
Timothy P. Fink, on October 22. He was a heavy equipment operator for Amazon.
