How to Craft a Dramatic Narrative

Every nonprofit group has a reason to exist (hopefully.) If you run a group, how good are you at telling your story? Storytelling expert Andy Goodman can help you get better at it.

The Princeton Area Community Foundation will host a workshop, “The Seven Distinguishing Characteristics of Dramatic Narrative,” on Thursday, June 16, from 9 to 10:20 a.m. at the Greenacres Country Club in Lawrenceville. Goodman will show attendees how to avoid “The 10 Most Common Mistakes in Nonprofit Storytelling” and find out how to conduct interviews that elicit the whole story.

For anyone who attended Goodman’s workshop, “Change the Story, Change the World” in May, 2014, the upcoming event is an opportunity to go deeper into the craft of storytelling. (For anyone who didn’t attend, he will begin this session with a brief refresher.)

Goodman, based in Los Angeles, is co-founder of the Goodman Center and an internationally recognized expert on storytelling. Along with the book, “Storytelling as Best Practice,” he is author of “Why Bad Ads Happen to Good Causes” and “Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes.” He also publishes a monthly journal, Free-Range Thinking, to share best practices.

He has been invited to speak at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs at Princeton, as well as at major foundation and nonprofit conferences across North America. He serves on the board of directors of Imagine LA, an organization working to end homelessness in Los Angeles, and is currently developing a course on storytelling for African Leadership University.
