Princeton Fusion Systems — a fully owned division of Princeton Satellite Systems — has been awarded $1.25 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The funding will be used to develop innovative plasma heating and confinement technologies targeted toward clean, portable power for high-value applications.
“We are excited to enter in a partnership with ARPA-E to develop this unique technology. This nuclear fusion addresses portable and remote energy needs that cannot be met by baseload energy systems, renewable energy systems, or other small fusion and fission concepts under development,” said Michael Paluszek, president of Princeton Fusion Systems.
The ARPA-E award builds on more than 20 years of collaborative work between Princeton Fusion Systems and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, run by Princeton University.
Princeton Fusion Systems received this award from ARPA-E’s OPEN 2018 program, in which teams develop innovative technologies to transform the nation’s energy system. Princeton Fusion Systems’ concept is a small, clean, portable, and safe “magnetic field-reversed configuration” fusion reactor. The team will seek to improve the design for high-value applications such as remote locations, emergencies and natural disasters, national security, and space.
