Frontier Air Opens, Will Expand Service

Just one day before Frontier Air started operating out of Trenton-Mercer Airport on November 16, the company announced it would be expanding its services.

The company announced it will offer nonstop, low-fare service from Trenton-Mercer to New Orleans, as well as Florida locations including Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and Tampa Bay starting in January. The airline also said it would be basing an Airbus A319 aircraft at Trenton-Mercer to operate the expanded service.

“This is an exciting day for us at Frontier as we bring significantly more low-fare options to the convenient Trenton-Mercer Airport, providing a time and money saving option to customers throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania,” said Daniel Shurz, Frontier’s senior vice president, commercial, in a news release. “Customers who fly from Trenton can now skip the congested and expensive alternative hubs in the region and enjoy quick, convenient, low-fare travel to top leisure destinations in Florida and Louisiana.”

Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes said the Mercer County region, with more than 2 million people in a 25-mile radius, is an untapped market: “Frontier is the right partner at the right time. We are confident the traveling public will embrace these new destinations, and as a result, the Mercer County economy will get an added boost.”

Frontier’s first flight — a 10:30 a.m. from Trenton to Orlando, FL, on November 16 — was the first commercial plane to fly out of Trenton-Mercer since September when Streamline Air suspended operations on its route from Trenton to Bedford, MA.

County officials are hoping that Frontier will fill the void left by Streamline. Frontier is a wholly owned subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings, an airline holding company that also owns Chautauqua Airlines, and Republic Airlines. Currently in its 19th year of operations, Frontier offers service to some 80 destinations in the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.
