On Wednesday, September 10, Ewing Township Mayor Bert Steinmann and other officials will join representatives of home builder Lennar New Jersey for the groundbreaking of Parkway Town Center, a new mixed-use development that will bring 820 residential units and 83,000 square feet of retail space to the former General Motors plant site on Parkway Avenue. The project, a public-private partnership between Ewing Township, Lennar, and RACER Trust, will be the largest development project in Ewing in decades, building housing, retail business, and a pedestrian-friendly downtown center near the SEPTA West Trenton Rail Station. Residential offerings at Parkway Town Center will consist of a mixture of single-family homes, townhomes and one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments located on second and third floors above ground-level retail space. A number of amenities are planned for the community, including a private clubhouse with community rooms, fitness facilities, and an outdoor pool and lounge area.
The building site has been tied up in pollution cleanup efforts and legal red tape since GM closed a parts plant there in 1998. Funds provided by the federal stimulus package of 2009 paved the way for a successful cleanup effort that removed toxic soil.
Officials have proposed moving the SEPTA station to Parkway Town Center and redeveloping the adjacent Naval Warfare Center site with an additional 300,000 square feet of retail space. The Parkway Town Center project also includes the long-planned completion of Silvia Street.
