Travel Tips for Women
‘I had wanderlust encoded in my DNA,” Stephanie Elizondo Griest told U.S.1 in an article last year (February 22, 2006) on the occasion of the publication of her book “Around the Bloc: My Life in Moscow, Beijing, and Havana.” Griest spent last year as a fellow at Princeton University, followed by a fellowship at Ledig House, an international artists’ colony in New York’s Hudson River valley. Her newest book, “100 Places Every Woman Should Go,” takes wanderlust in an entirely different direction. Griest holds a book signing on Tuesday, March 13, at Princeton Public Library.
“100 Places Every Woman Should Go” is designed to be a guidebook for women whether they are traveling in a group, with a friend, or solo. According to a press statement, the book helps readers discover the world’s best places to:
— steep yourself in the tranquility of a Buddhist meditation center
— let loose in the raucousness of a rumba club
— commune with the feisty spirits of heroines like Hatshepsut, Sappho, Catherine the Great, and Frida Kahlo
— race a camel, yak, or pony across the Mongolian steppe
— dive for pearls in Bahrain
— take a mud bath in a volcano off the coast of Colombia
— dance with Voodoo priestesses in Benin and urban cowboys in Texas
— roast in a steamy banya with a bottle of vodka (or two) in Moscow
Divided into sections like “Powerful Women and Their Places in History,” “Places of Indulgence,” and “Places of Adventure,” the book includes contact information, resources, and recommended reading. “Ten Tips For Wandering Women” features safety advice plus pointers on how to stop departing airplanes and avoid getting tossed off Trans-Siberian trains for not having your papers in order.
