‘The report of my death was an exaggeration,” wrote American writer and humorist Mark Twain in 1897. And to prove it Twain is reappearing in Trenton to commemorate his February 23, 1869, speech at the Taylor Opera House. But this time he arrives as a week-long exhibition and series of events at the Trenton City Museum in Cadwalader Park.
“Twain and Trenton’s Gilded Age,” featuring ephemera and artifacts related to Twain and the era in Trenton, will be on view Saturday, February 23, through Sunday, March 3. The museum is also hosting the following series of talks by urban historian and TCM board member David Bosted:
“Mark Twain and the Gilded Age,” Saturday, February 23, 2 p.m.; “The Unknown Early Mark Twain,” Sunday, Feb. 24, 2 p.m., and informal gallery talks, Wednesday through Friday, February 27 through March 1, 2 p.m.
Philadelphia-area sculptor Zenos Frudakis, known for his busts of Mark Twain — one of which is pictured above — and the statue of the late Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo, will talk on the “The Art of Historical Sculpture,” Sunday, March 3, 2 p.m.
