Are you a member of a book club or interested in joining a book club? George Street Playhouse is encouraging book clubs to read “Doubt” by John Patrick Shanley, the award-winning Broadway production that provoked more heated debates and post-play discussions than any play in years. George Street’s production of “Doubt” runs from November 27 to December 23.
“What do you do when you’re not sure?” Father Flynn asks in the opening lines of “Doubt,” setting the stage for a story of suspicion and moral certainty. Timely and controversial, “Doubt” is set in a Catholic school in 1964, where Sister Aloysius wrestles with her suspicions about the inappropriate conduct of a male colleague. Should she speak up about her concerns if she isn’t completely certain of the truth?
“Doubt” not only garnered both the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize but was also singled out as the top play of the year by Time, Entertainment Weekly, the Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Time Out New York, Daily News and The Star Ledger.
Book clubs are also encouraged to invite a member of the George Street Playhouse staff to attend their club meeting to lead the discussion. The theater is offering a book club package of $50 per person, which includes a copy of the book, study guide, and ticket to “Doubt” at George Street Playhouse.
