McCarter Theater Gala

On the same stage where she made her acting debut 40-some years ago as a mouse in “The Nutcracker,” Bebe Neuwirth made another entrance last Saturday, this time taking the stage as the headliner of McCarter’s annual gala.

With Scott Cady on grand piano, Neuwirth captured the crowd with her story-based songs, from cabaret to Broadway. She accented her voice with graceful arm movements and understated but very certain footwork reflecting a career that took off with her Broadway debut in “A Chorus Line” in 1980. But at the end of this performance (and on the cover of this issue), she was still Lee and Sydney’s daughter.
