The historic intermingling of spirit with artistic media will be the focus of “Celebrating the Scared Arts,” set for Saturday, September 23, from noon to 5 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Princeton.
The event includes the presentation of 16 panels created for the space by noted Japanese-American artist Makoto Fujimura, two play readings, a dance worship presentation, and the discussion “Re-thinking the Sacred Arts.”
The schedule runs as follows:
Noon to 12:45 p.m.: Welcome and lunch.
12.45 p.m.: “Re-thinking the Sacred Arts,” a conversation with Princeton Theological Seminary professor Gordon Graham about his new book “Philosophy, Art and Religion: Understanding Faith and Creativity.”
1:30 p.m.: Artist Fujimura’s presentation of the art pieces created for the newly completed sanctuary.
2:30 p.m.: Reading of “Fall from the Sky,” a screenplay dealing with the final moments of a doomed aircraft. The writer is New York City-area broadcast media professional and ABC video editor Colin Hill.
3:15 p.m.: Reading of play based on last days of Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, “Neither/Nor,” by playwright and assistant professor of literature and theater at Stevens Institute Antony Pennino.
4:15 p.m.: “To Give God Dance and Praise,” a music and movement service coordinated by Tom Coloa, music director for All Saints’ Church and Opera MODO in Princeton, and Hillary Person, a Philadelphia-based dancer and choreographer using contemporary technique for worship services.
5 p.m.: reception.
General registration is $15 and includes lunch and reception. Full-time students can attend free.
