Founded in 1968 by music journalist, pianist, and cellist, Barbara Sand, the Princeton University Summer Chamber Concerts were first offered outdoors in the Court of the Graduate College. Sand readied the space by pruning tree branches and recruited local children to sell lemonade and collect contributions. Children often perched in the trees to hear the music and listeners sat on the lawn with blankets and picnic baskets. Some of the early groups that have since become renowned international ensembles include the Emerson, Shanghai and Tokyo String Quartets.
Now held in Richardson Auditorium, the goal of the Summer Chamber Concerts has always been to provide chamber music performances of the highest caliber, free of charge, to the community. This year’s series presents the Horszowski Piano Trio on June 20, PUBLIQuartet on June 27, NY Brass Arts Trio on July 2, and Rolston String Quartet on July 12.
