Airport Improvements Approved

The Federal Aviation Administration has accepted Mercer County’s master plan to make improvements to Trenton-Mercer Airport including a new terminal, new development on the property, and improved taxiways. The plans will still have to get environmental and other approvals before construction can begin.

The plans were given the green light despite opposition from some community groups at three public meetings held over the last two years. Residents expressed concerns over increased air traffic and noise from jets.

“We’re thrilled that the FAA concurs with our blueprint for the airport over the next 15 to 20 years,” said County Executive Brian Hughes in a prepared statement. “We look forward to working with the FAA as we move toward starting the process of designing a new passenger terminal and initiating other airport projects.”

The county said it would now begin the “project-scoping process” with the FAA to begin the terminal design process. It also said reconstructing three of the taxiways could now begin.

The master plan, which can be viewed at www.mercercounty.org, was drawn by consultants Urban Engineers and McFarland Johnson and funded 90 percent by the FAA.
