Alexander Road Bridge to Be Replaced

A plan to replace the Alexander Road bridge over the D&R Canal is the topic of a public information session on Wednesday, December 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Monument Hall — the former Borough Hall at the corner of Stockton Street and Route 206 in Princeton.

The meeting is hosted by the state Department of Transportation, which has jurisdiction over the bridge. The existing bridge, built in 1948, is in poor condition and has no shoulders, which makes it difficult for buses and other large vehicles to cross at the same time as oncoming traffic. The proposed replacement bridge would have two 12-foot lanes, two five-foot shoulders, and two five-foot sidewalks.

Concurrently, Mercer County is planning the replacement of two adjacent bridges on Alexander Road, one over Stony Brook next to Turning Basin Park, and one over a tributary of Stony Brook just north of Basin Street.

Representatives from Mercer County and the state DOT will be on hand at the meeting. Residents can view information related to both projects, make comments, and ask questions.

Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2019 and take approximately eight months, during which time traffic will be detoured to Washington and Faculty roads. The estimated cost of the state project is $3.5 million.
