On the Front Lines of Gender Inequity in the Workplace

Share post:

Workplace gender inequity extends way beyond stereotypical male and female roles. While misogyny gets some attention, other gender inequities often get overlooked. Most people in the “other” gender spectrum prefer to stay invisible. That often leads to lack of role models and sometimes, unintended perpetuation of stereotypes.

The Association for Women in Science New Jersey chapter is organizing a diversity event to discuss real life challenges faced by many women in the sciences.

The workshop will take place Thursday, July 27, at 6 p.m. at the Rutgers Clinical Academic Building at 125 Paterson Street, Room 2144, in New Brunswick.

Jennifer Long, a combat veteran, will share her experience of fighting bias in the military. She served in Afghanistan as a male while undergoing gender transition at a time when transgender people were banned from the military. The ban was lifted in 2016.

The event will also feature James Millonig, senior associate dean of the school of graduate studies at Rutgers, who will discuss how gender minorities can thrive in science and higher education.
