The Princeton Symphony Orchestra Chamber Series is presenting a free concert of music, voice, and poetry at the Institute for Advanced Study on Sunday, January 24, and at the Monroe Public Library on Monday, January 25.
The presentations reflect the orchestra’s efforts to showcase works by contemporary composers who are women and highlight a connection between music and poetry.
The program features London-born American Anna Clyne’s “Rest These Hands” for solo violin and recitation. Clyne’s “The Seamstress,” a work for violin and orchestra inspired by a poem by William Butler Yeats, launched the PSO season.
The program also includes work by two British composers: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Along the Field,” a song cycle for voice and violin, and Gustav Holst’s “Four Songs for Voice and Violin, Op. 35.”
The performers are Alexander Chaleff, Winnie Nieh, and Alexandra Zelman-Doring.
Chaleff is PSO’s principal second violinist and past concert master for New World Symphony and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. Soprano Nieh has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Zelman-Doring is an award-winning Brooklyn-based poet and playwright whose work has been scored to music by composers Andile Khumalo from Durban; Jiri Kaderabek, Czech Republic; and David Adamcyk, Montreal, Canada.
The Sunday, January 24, concert will be performed at 4:30 p.m. at Wolfesohn Hall at the Institute for Advanced Study. While the performance is free, reserved tickets are required and can be ordered online at princetonsymphony.org or by calling 609-497-0020.
