Women in New Jersey earned 79 cents for every dollar earned by men in 2013, according to a new report released by the Bureau of Labor statistics.
The report studied the weekly earnings of men and women in full-time wage and salary positions. The women earned an average of $789 a week versus $993 for their male counterparts.
The high water mark for women’s earnings compared to men in New Jersey came in 2010 when it was at 85 percent. Around the country, Vermont women earned the most, bringing home 91 percent of what men made.
The study came with an important caveat: “Earnings in this release do not control for many factors that can be significant in explaining earnings differences.”
The study did not account for possible explanations for the wage gap, such as whether men and women work in different industries, whether men stay in the workforce longer and reach higher ranks, or whether women’s pay is affected by sexism, or whether the gap is due to a combination of factors.
