Jim Forgot to Tell Me

Jim forgot to tell me

how to fix the back door when it gets

stuck after a heavy rain

He told me that if he went first

not to miss him

He told me

I should linger in sunsets

and sleep late on Sunday mornings

I should drink expensive champagne

and remember him with a smile

I should live my life with no regrets

and stop working so much

I should think of our first kiss at the park

and have more kisses, more laughs

He told me

not to miss him

He told me

our time together was perfect, precious

because it was ours

He told me again and again

not to miss him

But he forgot to tell me

how to fix the back door after a heavy rain.

Giles, an adjunct English professor, has published short stories and poetry and is working on a novel.
