Internships are usually thought of as, at best, a way for young people entering the workforce to pay their dues and earn experience before gaining a full-time position. But one area group is re-imagining the internship as an experience that can also help older workers start a second career in the nonprofit sector.
The Next Step Internship program is designed to help people over 50 navigate a mid-life career change. Applications for fall internships in event management, program management and marketing, and volunteer management are now being accepted through Friday, August 30, at the Princeton Senior Resource Center.
A typical internship involves 90 to 120 hours of work plus training and supervision. Training includes time with the supervisor and executive director, orientation to nonprofit organizations, including the Senior Resource Center, attendance at staff meetings, and training sessions on nonprofit management. Stipends range between $750 to 1,000, depending on the length of the internship.
