Proterro, an alternative energy company currently based in Ewing, has tested a main component of a planned biofeedstock demonstration plant. The company says it recently tested a photobioreactor made from off-the-shelf parts.
The company plans to demonstrate that it can use bacteria to create sucrose out of water, sunlight, and oxygen. Much like sugar derived from corn or cane, it could be used to make biofuel.
“We scaled up our novel photobioreactor design and conducted independent functionality tests that confirmed the unit’s robustness,” said Proterro CEO Kef Kasdin, also a principal at Battelle Ventures, where Proterro is being incubated. “The modular photobioreactors, which are made from off-the-shelf materials, including polyethylene, can withstand category 1 hurricane winds,” she said.
Proterro also said Timothy Cooper has joined the executive team. Cooper comes from a 20-year career in bioprocessing. Prior to joining Proterro, he was responsible for Eastman Chemical Company’s biotechnology effort, managing genetic engineering and fermentation development programs.
Before Eastman Chemical, Cooper was fermentation research leader at Dow AgroSciences. He has also worked for several other major biotech companies.
Cooper earned a bachelors in chemical engineering from Tennessee Technological University and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin.

The Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Greater Mercer County has purchased approximately 2,200 square feet of additional space in the same office complex as the agency’s existing facility at 707 Alexander Road, Suite 204.
The additional space will allow JFCS to expand its counseling program, enlarge its food pantry, and provide additional resources for staff members to work with seniors and teens.
The charity had planned to move to the new Jewish Community Center on Clarksville Road but that project did not come to fruition (U.S. 1, March 13, 2013). The JFCS decided to expand at its current location instead.
