I don’t remember my peers and me being taught to acknowledge our dreams, much less map out ways to make them happen. We were told to get a job and retire with benefits. We resisted because we were growing up fast enough without worrying about our pension at age 20. We weren’t going to live that long anyway!
It would be front page news if I were invited back to college to teach a course, but if it happened, I would make sure my students learned how, and more importantly why, to develop both short and long-range plans. I would encourage them to build real contacts — a team of supporters — who would be there to help them through difficult and confusing times. And I would show them how to begin to acquire the resources they will need to strategically achieve their dreams, including opening a bank account, understanding their credit scores, and building physical assets — maybe their first condo.
With my expertise at the head of the class, my students will be bound to learn to pay attention to their vulnerabilities, liabilities, and exposures. And minimizing/managing risk would be our mantra: Don’t screw up and lose everything you’ve worked for so far! They will learn how to prevent problems and avoid danger. But when the inconceivable occurs, they will learn how to face the damages and to rebuild and restart by calling on their own strengths, helped along by the team of supporters and resources referenced above.
