For nearly a decade, Cantus Novus has been delighting audiences in Bucks County with both little-known as well as familiar choral works. Now, the group is extending an invitation to music enthusiasts across the river in New Jersey to come and experience its unique sound.
“Four years ago, we brought on a new artistic director, Ed McCall,” said Board President Kathryn Deguire. “We’ve grown by leaps and bounds since then, and are excited to be offering one fall concert, three Christmas concerts and two spring concerts in the coming year.”
Cantus Novus, or “New Song,” is a chamber chorus with roughly 35 members, including four high school interns. It offers a varied repertoire, ranging from music from the Renaissance to contemporary works. The group sings mostly a cappella, but at times uses an organ or piano for accompaniment. A brass quartet is frequently added for Christmas concerts.
“We try to give a balanced concert each time, representing different styles to appeal to a wide audience,” Deguire added.
This year’s Christmas concerts for chorus and brass have been selected: “The Glory of Christmas.” Performances will be Friday, December 3, at 8 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Solebury, PA, and Saturday, December 4, at 8 p.m. at Newtown Presbyterian Church in Newtown, PA. “We’re based in and rehearse in Bucks County, and are Artists-in-Residence at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Yardley, Pa., but that’s just minutes from our New Jersey friends,” Deguire stated. “Presently, we are looking to add tenors and basses. Auditions are ongoing, and all the information is on the Web.”
Part of the group’s Vision Statement is to “nurture and develop the skills of its musicians, who range from youths to seniors, providing the skilled singer with personal fulfillment and joy.
