You want to vote. But you are not registered and are unsure what to do about it. So perhaps you go online and find www.IWantToVote.com, which offers online voter registration for $9.95.
Sounds fair, but it is unnecessary, and the Mercer County Clerk’s office wants everyone to know that voter registration is not supposed to come with a price tag.
IWantToVote.com is a legitimate business, but it merely cashes in on naivete and creates an unnecessary step in the process, says county clerk Paula Sollami Covello. The site has potential voters complete a simple voter registration form, then mails the form for your signature. The applicant must then mail it to the state for processing. “Basically, this service fills out your voter registration form for $10.00,” Sollami Covello says. “All government entities provide voter registration forms at no cost. This is a waste of money”
Applications for voter registration can be obtained from the clerk’s office in all counties and municipalities.
Registration forms are also available in various state agencies and at Motor Vehicle Commission offices, but if you want to register online, you can do so as well. Mercer County residents van visit www.MercerCounty.org and go to the section labeled “County Clerk.” A voter registration form is available on the website in both English and Spanish.
Print the form and send the hard copy in for processing, for free. The registration deadline to vote in the next election is October 14. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who will be 18 years of age and will have lived in the county where they intend to vote for 30 days prior Election Day, November 5.
