There’s good news for adult dancers! According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, dancing offers protection against dementia better than reading, crossword puzzles, swimming, bicycling, and golfing. The reason is because social dancing requires split-second rapid-fire decision making, which combats dying brain cells and weakened synapses by forming new neural pathways.
Dancing promotes a healthier brain, and it also promotes healthier emotional states. The release of neurochemicals like serotonin reduces stress and helps us to manage the emotional “wear and tear” of everyday life. We need to feel good about ourselve,s and when you leave an active, creative, and challenging dance session you feel accomplished. Dancing promotes an active brain, happier emotions, and a stronger body. That is why dancing is an ideal habit for an overall healthier lifestyle.
Dancing is a lot less strenuous on the body than many other sports, and it still offers so many benefits. Consider how it fosters a spirit of cooperation by working with different partners, signaling and interpreting nonverbal cues. It also stimulates your creativity by taking learned sequences and using them to construct your own. Many find this to be a personal expression of art in motion. Dancing also promotes a healthy social and recreational lifestyle. My wife and I, for example, “dance the night away” regularly, sometimes with friends and sometimes for a more intimate experience between the two of us.
I’m privileged to be one of the many talented Latin, Ballroom, and Zumba instructors at Viva Ballroom Dance Studio in Lawrenceville. Together with the other instructors, we create experiences of health and wellness through our adult and children’s classes. This summer’s agenda includes private and group lessons, group exercise classes, dance day camps for children, and our popular monthly socials for adults.
At Viva, you’ll find a program for all ages. Whether you want to get your children away from the TV and video games or whether you’re looking for all the health and social benefits for yourself, Viva has something for you and your loved ones.
If you’re a parent or grandparent looking for ways to keep your children active, social, and entertained then consider Viva’s children’s programs. Viva instructors are intentional about instilling the kind of virtues that are rewarded in all aspects of life. The discipline and interpersonal skills that children learn at Viva transfer to their academic performance and social interactions.
Viva students are also highly ranked in regional and national dance competitions, often taking first place in various divisions. Our students also have the option of performing in beautiful showcases throughout the year to keep them excited about what they’re learning.
The benefits of dance and group exercise are many, but you have to experience them first-hand. Viva makes that easy with a free trial lesson for first-time visitors. Viva’s prices are surprisingly affordable, and there are a variety of payment options including drop-in rates, monthly rates, or annual contracts. Our most popular payment plan is the unlimited month-to-month option, which allows for someone to attend both group exercise and dance classes. Come experience Viva for yourself. We promise a healthier, happier you!
