Once upon a time, in July, 1948, Sally Pitcher embarked on a trip to
Europe on the Marine Flasher, a converted Liberty Ship. At the dock,
Pitcher met fellow traveler and recent Princeton graduate, William
Sword. They traveled to Paris together, fell in love, became engaged
the next year, married in 1950, and had four children. To toast their
love of Paris and each other they began to have an annual Bastille Day
party at their home. The party grew each year, and in the mid-1980s,
when Sally joined the board of trustees of Trinity Counseling
Services, the party became Trinity’s annual fundraiser. (William
Sword, who formed his own Princeton-based investment firm in 1976,
died in June, 2005.)
This year’s party, aptly titled "A Movable Feast," inspired by Ernest
Hemingway’s ode to Paris, was originally scheduled for Drumthwacket
but was moved at the last minute to Pretty Brook Farm at Princeton Day
School, due to the government shut-down. It was a true garden party,
with perfect weather and dozens of beautiful women in equally
beautiful summer cocktail dresses, complementing this year’s theme of
a French flower market.
Guests enjoyed cocktails on the lawn, then music by Double Take in the
dining tent. The menu, by Main Street Fine Catering, featured eggplant
caponata on sliced French baguette, tenderloin au poivre and king
prawn, and banana cream profiteroles for dessert. Every place setting
was topped with a small card containing a quote from Hemingway’s book,
such as "I’ve seen you, beauty, and you belong to me now, whoever you
are waiting for and if I never see you again, I thought. You belong to
me and all Paris belongs to me and I belong to this notebook and this
pencil." Tres chic.
