As empty nesters near retirement age and look toward downsizing they face a quandary. They want a smaller home, yet are not willing to compromise on quality. This is where Lisa Tobias, owner of Tobias Design in Hopewell, is helping her clients.
By this stage, people have developed a sense of decor and have a desire for quality. “They do not want to live in a home with builders-grade cabinetry, backsplash, and countertops. They’ve become accustomed to higher-performing, longer-lasting product,” Lisa says.
Lisa recently conducted a complete remodeling job for a couple moving into a single-family home in a 55 and older community. In other words, they were downsizing to luxury. Lisa feels the term luxury does not necessarily mean the same as expensive.
In this specific remodeling project, Lisa created a space that is both lighter and brighter. “It is a small kitchen.” The dark stained cabinetry was replaced with white cabinetry. A darker colored cabinet was placed in the transition space between the casual kitchen and the more formal great room that opened up from the kitchen.
She stayed within the original footprint of the kitchen, which did not require moving plumbing or electric. The couple purchased moderately priced appliances. They added a farm sink with a bridge faucet and pulled it away from the wall slightly to have it look more like a charming piece of furniture. Three larger drawers were replaced with four smaller drawers, which created easier access and greater organization. A lazy Susan was added to the corner in order to fully access otherwise dead space.
For additional storage, Tobias designed a multifunctional hutch that is home to a bar, organization space as an alternative to a desk, and a TV. Although it has the same finish as the kitchen cabinets, its wood counter top sets it apart.
Says Lisa: “there are many ways to create the look of charm and affluence that do not cost a lot of money.”
“A kitchen can be beautiful, but if the process of getting there was awful, that is what the client will remember.” Lisa strives to be a “yes, because” referral, instead of a “yes, but” one.
