Thank you so much for Richard K. Rein’s story-essay in the July 11 issue. I am an avid birder and, by extension, fascinated by how fragile, feathered beings manage to generate, shelter and feed young ones —in essence, out of thin air. How lucky to see a hummingbird nest, normally too tiny for anyone to notice.
And your last paragraph was just what I needed: today Mr. Trump was asked for solutions to family reunification, and he responded that the solution was “not to come to the U.S. illegally in the first place.” Clearly he has never seen his own children under immediate threat.
If he had, he would “surely do what he believes is the best course of action for the family,” and damn the consequences. We can’t accept all would-be immigrants. But we can treat them and their children with humaneness and empathy. Perhaps your point.
