I am just now reading “Our Towns” by James and Deborah Fallows. This is a feel good book that counteracts some of the current political vitriol. It talks about what the Fallows learned in their small plane flying journey visiting in smaller towns across the country over the last few years.
One of the towns they write about is Burlington, Vermont. They single out a print newspaper called Seven Days that started out as an alt-weekly in the 1990s and is now a real force in local and statewide affairs as well as being the food-music-culture source.
Its publisher was quoted as saying “People look at our paper, and it makes them happy and interested to be here. That motivates them to do something and participate — which makes it more of a community.”
As I read that I was thinking about what a contribution U.S. 1 has made to making this area a more cohesive and interesting place encouraging people to participate.
