Scott Schneider knows about living strong. Schneider, owner of The Max Challenge in West Windsor, is an entrepreneur, fitness coach, motivator, and sometimes comedian for his club’s members.

The Max opened in May, 2013, at 217 Clarksville Road in the Village Square Shopping Center. With Schneider at the helm, inspiring and pushing his members to live healthy, the fitness center — it’s not a “gym,” he’ll be sure to tell you — grew quickly, converting strangers to friends as well as couch potatoes to active.

The Max is unique, Schneider says. There’s no maze of exercise equipment to navigate through, rather, there is an open room filled with friendly faces who guide members through a 10-week-long fitness challenge that also promotes a healthy lifestyle.

“We provide a lot of ongoing support, especially in terms of nutrition,” said Schneider. “It’s not just about a diet; this is a lifestyle change.”

After the 10-week challenge is over, members can keep coming to The Max on a month-to-month basis with no contracts to keep up the various fitness classes held each day. There isn’t a defined amount of weight one must lose, as each member sets their own goals and works to meet them with help from the staff. The environment at The Max differs from that of a gym, where people sometimes experience anxiety. Instead, Schneider, along with instructors Jennifer Kirson and Darrin Holder, and even its members, help and support each other.

“It’s a very positive environment. “We clap it up, cheer each other on, give each other high fives. One of the great things about The Max is you make a New Year’s resolution every 10 weeks!” says Schneider.

“The by-products that come out of the program are even greater than the thousands of pounds our members have lost. Since our opening in 2013, members have come off of cholesterol medicine, blood pressure pills, and cut down on their diabetes medications.”

The Max’s most recent challenge began on January 12. The 10-week program costs $450, however the center is currently running a promotion that includes a $100 discount. Some insurance carriers will cover the cost of the program as part of their own fitness programs.
