A new year at The Dance Corner brings new faces and new classes to help bring dance to life for your child.
We’re delighted to welcome three new instructors to our ranks: Ashten Banister, Kenroy Boothe, and Shirin Stave-Matias. Ashten performed in and led several productions at Rider University and Westminster Choir College, and has worked professionally as a choreographer at the Arundel Barn Playhouse in Maine. She will coach our Elite Team competitive dancers and lead our new Musical Theater classes.
Musical Theater is your child’s starting path on the road to Broadway. The class focuses on learning dance styles from popular Broadway shows and is available for children ages 6 to 9 and children 10 and older. No experience is necessary.
Kenroy Boothe comes to us from Brooklyn, NY to lead our new boys’ Hip Hop classes. Kenroy specializes in “Lite Foot” and “Caribbean Dance Hall.”
Hip Hop focuses on age-appropriate combinations of funky footwork and arm moves that define this high-energy style. Classes are for children ages 6 to 9, 10 to 12, and teens.
We’ve also expanded our repertoire to include afternoon Kindersteps for children ages 3 and 4. Kindersteps is a gentle introduction to ballet and basic dance steps, using circle spots and props to encourage our young dancers to discover the joy of movement. Parents may watch from the waiting room or leave and return for pick-up at the end of class. Toilet training is not necessary.
There are also expanded pre-dance classes for 4-to-7-year- olds in ballet, tap, jazz, and tumbling. Budding dancers will learn the beginner steps of each style and the basic terminology.
We have brought in Shirin Stave-Matias as an instructor for these additional classes. Shirin’s teaching resume is extensive; first as a professional dancer with international experience, and later as a teacher of world dance, creative movement, yoga, and other classes for people of varying ages both in the United States and Portugal. Shirin looks forward to being a part of the Dance Corner team, focusing on teaching creative movement and pre-ballet classes for our youngest students.
We offer tumbling, children ages 6 to 8 or 9 and older can learn fun acrobatic tricks that will enhance their dance skills and routines in our new Acro/Tumbling classes. These focus on back flexibility and limber work to make any dancer’s moves pop.
Similarly, our new Jumps and Turns classes, for children 6 and up, will teach different types of jumps and turns to enhance any dance performance.
Last but not least is our new Contemporary class for children 9 and older. Contemporary is a combination of lyrical, modern, jazz and ballet that focuses on fluid floor work ‒‒ perfect for any dancer who wants to perform in shows or competitions.
Our non-profit dance company will be holding auditions for our winter performance of The Nutcracker on Saturday, September 10 and for our Elite Team, The Dance Corner’s competitive team on Saturday, September 11. Dedicated dancers who can work with other dancers are always welcome to audition. Audition times are listed on our website.
We welcome our new instructors and are excited about our expanded classes, but we’re not changing how we teach dance. At The Dance Corner, our goal is to help young dancers reach their full potential, whether they want to develop their dance skills, get some exercise, or build a career in dance. Whatever your child’s aspirations and dreams, we strive to help them reach their goals in a positive and nurturing environment.
