Although women do the vast amount of laundry performed in households around the world, men still outnumber women in the professional laundry services industry, primarily due to their greater access to the sizeable capital necessary and a general lack of exposure to trade skills. But the tide is turning as women recognize that their innate project management skills, resourcefulness, and customer-centric orientation can change the paradigm of what a laundromat is and create a neighborhood asset and steady livelihood.

Cathy Neilley, principal owner of Spin Doctor Laundromat stated that her willingness to learn, business skills culled from 20 years as a pharmaceutical executive, experience as an adjunct professor of business, plus healthy credit, enabled her to build a laundry business that has grown 10 percent each year since opening in 2012. She was recently named an Electrolux Brand Ambassador and the store was awarded 2015 “Best of Trenton.”

“This is not the laundromat of the past that is typically small, not very clean, and does not appear to be safe at any hour. Customers describe washing clothes at Spin Doctor as an experience,” says Cathy. “They recognize that the design and amenities are thought out and clearly intended to make their lives easier: lots of parking, outdoor and indoor seating, electronic doors, a modern, upbeat decor, air conditioning, a dedicated child play area with educational toys, refreshment and wash product vending, pet designated washers, and environmentally friendly, high-performance, easy-to-use dial-control Electrolux machines that are so advanced they can report the number of machines available before you leave your home and text you when your wash is done!”

“Technology supports our high level of service,” she continued. “In addition to the texting, we offer free Wi-Fi and a charging station for use by patrons, an electronic card system that delivers numerous benefits to customers including the ability to view their usage, request balance transfers, add funds, qualify for birthday and loyalty points that convert to cash, and the convenience of leaving coins and cash at home since they can be lost or stolen.”

Thankfully, the technology does not prove intimidating to customers over 30 years old because the staff is very attentive.

When preparing her business plan Cathy did research on the industry revealed that store cleanliness and safety were highly desired attributes for potential customers.

Check that box — the place is spotless. Hardly a moment goes by when a staff member is not wiping something down.

They’ve also addressed the safety factor: Spin Doctor Laundromat is located in a busy shopping plaza with a police station less than a block away, 24/7 video surveillance, and on-site staff during operating hours. “Consider how important that peace of mind is to customers — that’s priceless” says Cathy.

Spin Doctor also offers specialized laundry services, such as wash, dry and fold, for $1 per pound that can help individuals obtain greater work-life balance and potentially support wellness. Even if you manage to keep your hamper at arm’s length, you can entertain yourself on their video kiosk, attend one of their raffle draw events, or participate in a karaoke night.

We conclude that this woman’s entry into the laundry business is just what the doctor ordered.
