Travelers and business owners in the Rocky Hill area have voiced their frustrations over the stagnant Route 518 bridge project (U.S. 1, August 24, 2016) and Somerset County leaders have heard the call.

The county board of freeholders has agreed to fund the completion of the project, which had begun in June and come to a halt in July amid a standoff between Gov. Chris Christie and Democrats in the state legislature over transportation funding.

The closed bridge, which carries the busy road over the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Franklin Township, was causing massive traffic jams and was punishing to area businesses.

Mercer County has taken a different track. On September 19 the county filed a lawsuit against the state Department of Transportation for stopping road projects, including bridges on Carter Road in Lawrence and South Broad Street in Hamilton.
