New laser procedures allow those with vein issues to be treated and then walk out the door, the same day, with minimal discomfort.
The Vein Center at Lawrenceville is Radiology Affiliates Imaging’s (RAI) outpatient treatment center for varicose and spider veins. It brings what RAI has been doing at the hospital-level for years to the outpatient center thanks to RAI’s team of radiologists lead by Joel Neuman, M.D., interventional radiologist. According to Physician Liaison Ruth Hawthorne, this is a breakthrough.
"This isn’t your mother’s vein treatment; there’s no ‘stripping,’" she emphasized. "Our Endovenous Laser Treatment for varicose veins lasts approximately 45 minutes per leg, is minimally invasive and results in only minor discomfort. Best of all, you walk out the door and back to your activities the same day."
Varicose veins and spider veins are two very different issues. Varicose veins are the result of small leaks in leg veins or damage to the vein valves. Those defects cause pain, throbbing and burning, can occur in veins of all sizes and will only get worse over time.
"We check for leaks via an ultrasound procedure called a " reflux study" Hawthorne added. "Then, the laser procedure corrects the issues. This procedure is covered by most insurances because it’s a medical, not a cosmetic issue."
Spider veins are different, and are considered cosmetic because there are no defects found in the reflux study. They are very thin veins located close to the skin’s surface and are not essential to the larger venous system. Treatment also is outpatient and non-surgical, and called Sclerotherapy.
"Sclerotherapy is an injection therapy using a minute needle to deliver a solution to the vein to fade spider veins over time," said Hawthorne. "The number of treatments depends on the extent of the condition. Each treatment takes about 30 minutes, and results in only minor discomfort."
Because spider veins are cosmetic, Sclerotherapy is not covered by insurance. The Vein Center at Lawrenceville is offering a Summer Special at the Lawrenceville office, which includes a mini-reflux study and 45 minutes of spider vein treatment for $325; additional treatments are only $125.
"One very important thing: while our Vein Center is new, we aren’t," noted Hawthorne. "We’ve been around for nearly 40 years and are specialists. We get a lot of referrals from other doctors and from patients, which is the best way to gauge the quality of any organization. We invite you to contact us and learn more."
