The teachings of yoga are the same essential principles that lie at the foundations of all faiths, and are grounded in the moral and ethical precepts of non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, non-greed, purity, contentment, self-discipline, study of spirituality, and dedication to higher purpose. The true yogi respects all traditions, recognizing that although paths are many, Truth is One.
The non-profit Princeton Integral Yoga Community Center (IYCC), nurtures physical and mental wellness, spiritual awakening and growth, and empowers and inspires people to serve in their communities with joy, wisdom, and compassion. A truly multi-faceted community center with more than 3,000 square feet of studio space, a meditation room, a library, and community kitchen, will host Princeton Adult School’s Spring 2018 Meditation class series, and is currently hosting the YWCA Breast Cancer Resource Center’s weekly Restorative Yoga and Healing Meditation classes.
Leyna Schaeffer, who recently joined the IYCC as its primary Aerial, Acro-Yoga, and Yin Instructor, remarks, “After 18 years of owning and managing yoga studios, I’m finally home. The IYCC embodies the essence of yoga on and off the mat — ‘Metta’ — love and kindness.”
Currently in the midst of its annual fundraising campaign to support and expand programming, the IYCC has raised funds to support scholarships enabling a Princeton High School teen to complete 200 hour yoga certification. Elijah Okoye now leads weekly Teens-Only Yoga Meditation classes.
The non-profit center has also supported programming for teen moms from Trenton’s Department of Children and Families, and a Girl Scout Troop for a two-week mindfulness program. In the past year, IYCC hosted music luminaries Wah! Daniel Bellone, Sharon Silverstein, pop-star Kyrie London, global yoga Instagram sensations Erin Kelly and Steph Gongora, spiritual leaders Rabbi Shefa Gold and Swami Mahesh, and welcomes kirtan superstar Jai Uttal this November.
IYCC students range in age from 3 to nearly 90, from all walks of life, many advanced yogis, and many more beginners. Students, corporate professionals, athletes, professors, physicians and their families, and those with anxiety, scoliosis, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, lupus, depression, special needs, or other challenges all participate in entirely accessible classes. The Integral Yoga class has been taught to thousands globally and is utilized by Dr. Dean Ornish in his work of reversing heart diseases, and in Michael Lerner’s Commonweal Cancer Help Program.
IYCC celebrated its first anniversary this past November by hosting the “Bliss Your Socks Off!” Yoga Retreat, welcoming more than 150 people interested in personal growth. IYCC Executive Director Jayadeva Mandelkorn described the event as “An awesome, inspiring, crazy fun weekend with some of the greatest yoga Lights taking us to new heights of healing and awakening.”
