Personal attention and spending adequate time with patients as they need are the hallmarks of Dr. Punitha Shivaprasad’s practice at Premier Gastroenterology of Princeton. Dr. Shiva, as she is affectionately known by her patients, understands the importance of learning about all of the medical issues experienced by her patients. She takes pride in asking questions, listening to her patients’ concerns, and bringing the most up-to-date procedures to her medical practice.
A graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine with a three-year medical residency followed by a three-year fellowship in Gastroenterology — both at Cooper University Hospital in Camden — as well as an additional year of advanced fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, Dr. Shivaprasad understands the connection between the gut and the brain and how each affects the other in the overall health of a patient.
Premier Gastroenterology and Dr. Shivaprasad provide the most modern and technologically advanced care for a wide variety of issues, including abdominal pain, colon polyp and colon cancer screening, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer, GI bleed, blood loss anemia, and celiac disease. Dr. Shivaprasad’s specialties also include women’s digestive health, IBS, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease, and diseases involving the gallbladder, liver, and pancreas.
Dr. Shivaprasad has a special interest in Endoscopic Ultrasound and Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) which will benefit the local community with early detection of lethal cancers of the pancreas, bile ducts, stomach, and the esophagus. Early detection of these cancers improves survival and will help Dr. Shivaprasad and the patient’s oncology team to choose appropriate treatments for each stage of their disease.
With affiliations at Penn Medicine at Princeton Medical Center and with Surgical Specialists at Princeton in the Forrestal Village, Dr. Shivaprasad can perform endoscopic procedures at state-of-the-art facilities.
Often called on to speak at professional organizations, Dr. Shivaprasad brings her in-depth knowledge of Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy to other medical professionals. Before opening Premier Gastroenterology of Princeton, she pioneered the Endoscopic Ultrasound program at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and was named that hospital’s first Director of Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy.
“I had always wanted to be a doctor since I was six years old. However, there are twists and turns in life,” Dr. Shivaprasad said. She was married with three children before having the opportunity to go to medical school. “I wanted to be a gastroenterologist because of my experience in colon cancer research. It was my dream, and nothing can stop your dreams. My husband was very supportive and helped me in every way. Now my goal is to develop Premier Gastroenterology of Princeton as the local destination for advanced digestive health.”
Dr. Punitha Shivaprasad brings a lifetime of interest in medicine and many years of intense study in the medical issues of the gastrointestinal system to her practice at Premier Gastroenterology of Princeton.
