Cotsen Children’s Library’s annual 350 for 50 writing competition challenges children ages 9 to 14 to write a 350-word story that includes the sentence “It unfurled slowly, then settled.”
Winning stories will be illustrated and published in the Summer 2016 issue of the Picture Book Press, and on the library’s Pop Goes the Page creative blog. Authors will receive a $50 shopping spree at Labyrinth Books!

Princeton Girlchoir is accepting audition appointments for its 2016-’17 season. Auditions are open to girls entering grades three through 12 this fall. Auditions for new choristers are scheduled for Saturdays, June 4 and 11, at Princeton Day School, but special arrangements can be made for families unable to attend on those dates.
Girls will be asked to sing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” along with some exercises that demonstrate their vocal range, and to complete a few musical challenges. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society invites gardeners in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware to participate in its Gardening and Greening Contest. The contest is open to backyard gardeners, community gardeners, and all who are passionate about greening public spaces.
The 10 contest categories are Children’s Garden; Combination Garden; Container Garden; Environmental Initiatives; Flower Garden; Garden Block; Public Space: Planting/Parks; Rooftop Gardens; Urban Farm; and Vegetable Garden.
Entries will be judged on maintenance and horticultural practices, as well as the variety, color, and suitability of plantings. Design and total visual effects will also be considered, with extra points awarded for creativity and sustainable practices. Volunteer judges will be chosen for their expertise and achievements.
Entries will be accepted through Wednesday, June 15. Gardeners who projects are chosen for recognition will be invited to an awards reception, where photos of the winning gardens will be showcased. Somerset Valley Players holds auditions for “Sleeping Beauty” on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10 and 11, at 8 p.m. at Somerset Valley Playhouse, 689 Amwell Road, Hillsborough. Performance dates are July 15 through 31.
Open roles and age ranges include: King, 30-50; Queen, 30-50; Princess Beauty, 15-19; Prince Charming, 16-25; Court Jester, 16-40; Queen of the Fairies, 20+; two Fairies, 18 and up; Barbel (Wicked Fairy), 30 and up; two Ladies-in-Waiting, 18 and up; two Lords, 18 and up; Cook, 18 and up; Cook’s Assistant, 15 and up; and Soldiers and Pages, 15 and up.
Readings will be from the script. All cast members must be able to move well, as there is some ballroom dancing required.
Call for Art
The Lakefront Gallery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton is accepting submissions for “Wall Worthy,” a juried exhibit of mixed media, photographs, paintings, woodworking, quilting, acrylic — any form of art that will hang on a gallery hook.
The accepted artwork will be on display at Lakefront Gallery June 25 through September 15. Juried awards totaling $400 will be presented. Both individual artwork and complete bodies of work will be presented awards at the opening reception on Thursday, July 7, at 6:30 p.m.
Approximately 80 pieces will be accepted. All entries may be submitted on a CD, DVD, or memory stick; or uploaded to Dropbox. The judges will be Aubrey J. Kauffman and Leon Rainbow. Submissions are due by Monday, May 23. Artwork is to be hand delivered on Friday or Saturday, June 24 or 25.
