Mercer County Community College is outsourcing some of its IT work, which will result in six of its 22 technology department employees being laid off on April 15.

According to press reports, the college expects to save about $500,000 over three years. In addition to the layoffs, some IT staff have been shuffled to other departments. Of the laid off workers, some have gone to work for Ellucian, the new vendor.

Among services offered by the new provider is a mobile app that allows students to see schedules, grades, and other information on their smartphones.

“Technology moves rapidly,” spokesman Jim Gardner was quoted as saying. “This will make registration easier, financial aid services more efficient, and will better coordinate scheduling and other critical college functions.”
