At a time when many critics chide New Jersey for being unfriendly to businesses of any size, the state announced it has offered a $7.2 million incentive package to Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical firm which is setting up its North American headquarters at 1100 College Road (show above). The deal, announced last week, includes a $5.4 million grant for creating jobs, $1.39 million in sales tax exemptions, and a $420,000 income tax credit aimed to foster expansion at the College Road site.
The new building has the capacity for more than 400 additional employees and will feature an in-house training facility capable of training 100 employees simultaneously. “It’s rare that we can make an announcement that’s a public-policy trifecta,” Governor Jon Corzine said. “Good for public health, good for the economy, and good for the environment.”
Novo Nordisk is the world’s largest manufacturer of insulin for diabetes treatment. The company also makes hormone treatments and growth hormones and currently operates its U.S. headquarters at 100 College Road.
Corzine called Novo Nordisk “one of New Jersey’s most important partners in business and in health-care,” adding that the firm’s plans to stay in New Jersey, heart of the pharmaceutical industry, bolsters the state’s reputation as “the world’s medicine chest.”
The deal comes amid ever-darkening economic news in the Garden State. New Jersey is desperate to stem the loss of jobs, which has already passed the 10,000 mark this year. Novo Nordisk, at least, is bucking that trend. The firm reported 528 employees in the Princeton area in 2007 and now reports more than 725. It is the fourth-largest pharmaceutical employer in the region.
Novo Nordisk plans to begin occupying the new campus this spring. The lease is for 15 years and the $20 million facility is the first of five, five-story buildings to be completed on the Princeton Corporate Campus, an 800,000-square-foot office development.
Packing Company Gets 100K Feet

Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson recently leased 112,000 square feet of office space at 23 Orchard Road, a 70-acre site in Skillman. Johnson & Johnson, headquartered in New Brunswick, entered the deal with JER/Herring Orchard, a collaboration of Virginia-based JER Partners and Herring Management Inc., located at 23 Orchard Road. The companies were represented by brokers from Colliers Houston & Co., which is headquartered at Cottontail Lane in Somerset.
Terms were not released, though remaining space at the 238,000-square-foot site is available at $23.75 per square foot.

ExpertPlan Acquires TSCI
ExpertPlan, an East Windsor company that provides private-label recordkeeping for retirement plans such as 401(k)s, has acquired TSCI, formerly Trust Service Company Inc. (www.tscusers.org), a Pennsylvania-based application development company that develops and sells recordkeeping and trust accounting software products.
TSCI’s products use IBM Java-hosted AS400 technology that is very similar to that which is used by ExpertPlan. The company has 44 clients, including banks, private employer retirement plans, third party administrators, and associations. It also markets its products to financial advisors and certified public accountants.
Julian Onorato, ExpertPlan chairman and CEO, sees the acquisition as significant for his company, which was founded in 1999 and has approximately 50 employees. He has announced that TSCI’s employees will relocate to ExpertPlan’s offices.
TSCI will be held as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Financial details of the detail are not being disclosed.
