New Path Weight Loss on Nottingham Way in Hamilton is your one-stop solution to finally losing weight and becoming healthy. Two years ago Dr. Christina Hector and Dr. Lamont Mitchell opened their offices to educate people about non-surgical approaches to weight loss.

Dr. Hector and Dr. Mitchell run a very small practice. At every visit you will meet with one of them, and they answer their own calls and e-mails. As trained physicians, upon your first visit, they order bloodwork in order to complete a more comprehensive approach to helping you.

Dr. Hector received her training in family medicine with a specialization in sports medicine. Dr. Mitchell’s training is also in family medicine, but with a specialization in emergency medicine.

“Through my training I saw people battling with obesity; when I was in residency I would have five minutes to address chronic issues such as obesity. I would see them a month later and they were at the same point. I didn’t have enough time to give them the proper tools. That’s where this comes in. We focus on weight loss and give them what they need,” explains Dr. Hector.

“We provide information and counseling to lose weight and maintain weight with encouragement and tools they can use,” explains Dr. Hector. Initial consultations last 45 minutes to an hour; follow-up sessions are 15 minutes long.

At the initial session they discuss what patients have done in the past, what has worked for them, and what hasn’t worked and create a unique plan that will fit their lifestyle. Follow-up visits happen every week in order to be able to address issues quickly. To keep patients accountable, there is a weekly weigh-in.

“Maybe they thought they could do it, but they have not done anything. It is about making it fit into what they are looking for as a weight loss program. We nudge them to say ‘you can do it,’” continues Dr. Hector.

Dr. Hector and Dr. Mitchell offer a conservative approach to weight loss to lose weight as naturally as possible. They recognize the most successful plans are ones that fit into the lifestyle of their patients. “If a person doesn’t like going to the gym, I can’t recommend it. They are not going to do it. I try to figure out what they enjoy doing, such as going for a walk, especially on a nice day. I had one patient who enjoyed canoeing, that is good for cardio, especially with nice weather. If it doesn’t fit in they are not going to do it. This is something you learn along the way,” adds Dr. Hector.

“Once they leave our office they have the program set for them,” explains Dr. Hector. Programs may include medically provided meal replacement, a modified diet, and exercise. “When patients know they are going to see me every week, they follow the recommendations.”
