The Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness is seeking volunteers during to help work at free tax preparation sites throughout Mercer County in the upcoming tax season.
“By joining the Mercer CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) campaign, and volunteering four to eight hours per week, you will be helping low-income families and individuals file for refunds,” says Tarry Truitt, director of projects and communications for the alliance.
Anyone wishing to be a volunteer tax preparer must participate in a two-day training program. They are being held on Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1, 9:30 a.m.; Friday and Saturday, December 7 and 8, 9:30 a.m.; and Saturday, December 1, 9:30 a.m. and Saturday December 8, 9:30 a.m. The training will be held in the conference room at the United Way, Crossroad Corporate Center, 3150 Route 1, Suite 230. The program includes training in practical knowledge in tax law, the use of TaxWise software, and hands-on practice completing tax returns. In order to be certified, volunteers must pass an IRS test.
“Last year, we helped over 1,160 Mercer families and individuals with free tax preparation,” says Truitt. “Thousands more learned about the EITC and free tax sites from Mercer Alliance. Last year the total of all EITC filers brought over 45 million EITC dollars into Mercer County.”
