‘In creating this cabaret, I wanted to explore the ups and downs of being single through song, similar to how the television show ‘Sex and the City’ captured both the funny and challenging aspects of being single and looking for love,” says cabaret artist Karen Gross. “In addition to singing songs I love, it has been great to write and perform comedy and get people really laughing at the things we go through in the dating game.”

On the heels of sold-out performances around the region, Gross will perform her comedic cabaret show “Sex & the Single Singer” on Friday, October 26, at the Cosmopolitan Club in New Hope.

“Sex & the Single Singer” is a sassy, sexy musical journey of a woman’s experiences living on her own, looking for love and forging her own path in the world. In addition to showcasing her acclaimed vocal style, Gross employs her theatrical, comedic and playwriting talents in the self-penned show. She plays herself as well as several hilarious characters. The cabaret show includes lots of music — both familiar and original songs — plus contemporary humor intended for adults.

‘Sex & the Single Singer” has garnered significant attention and acclaim since premiering at the Cabaret at Odette’s in New Hope. Gross has since performed the show several times at Philadelphia venues including the Tin Angel, World Cafe Live, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance.

Bob Egan, producer/founder of the Cabaret at Odette’s, and the producer behind the new Cosmopolitan Club, says of Egan: “With Julia Roberts’ looks, and a voice to match, Karen Gross is one of the most refreshing performers I had the pleasure of watching grow and become more and more dynamic over the years.”

Gross, a native of Doylestown, PA, who currently resides in Philadelphia, has established herself as one of the area’s rising musical talents. As a singer and songwriter, Gross has released a CD of original music, “Navigating,” and has performed at Lincoln Center, the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg, and Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA. Since beginning to perform professionally in 2001, Gross has had a diverse career as a singer-songwriter, vocalist, pianist, and now cabaret artist. She has been invited to perform as a special guest for hit artists Lisa Loeb, Jeffrey Gaines, and John Eddie.

For “Sex & the Single Singer” Gross draws from her theatrical training as well as her musical experience. In college, she studied acting and playwriting and wrote, directed, and starred in an original play, “Conquistadoras: Adventures of Women Travelers,” about the real-life experiences of women traveling solo around the world. At Central Bucks East High School in Buckingham, PA, Gross held lead roles in theater productions alongside classmate Justin Guarini from “American Idol” fame.

Early on Gross discovered music as a means of capturing the stories, emotions, and fleeting moments of everyday life. As a child, while digging in her parents’ album collection, she found inspiration in songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Carole King. With a few years of piano lessons under her belt she began writing her own folk-pop songs at age 14.

At the October 26 show Gross will be accompanied on piano by John Conahan, an acclaimed Philadelphia singer-songwriter, pianist, and educator, who has performed at the Kimmel Center, the Cabaret at Odette’s, Chris’s Jazz Cafe‚ and World Cafe Live and whose music has aired on WXPN 88.5.
