Lambertville Homecoming

Just about this time last year Lambertville bade farewell

to artist John McDowell Williams and his wife Mary as they set out

for greener pastures. This year the former proprietors of the Mercantile

Coffee Shop and Gallery are being welcomed home with open arms.

The occasion is a grand opening weekend at the Papier Sun Art Gallery,

39 North Main Street in Lambertville, where Williams has taken over

the front gallery. Back to back receptions on Saturday, July 19, from

3 to 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 20, from noon to 5 p.m., will feature

an exhibition of Williams most recent watercolors and oils.

The coffee shop and gallery had been a favorite meeting place for

many of Lambertville’s resident artists and visitors. Now, after some

time away traveling and working on new endeavors, Williams is looking

forward to being part of the artistic community once again.

A Navy veteran and former resident of Maine, Williams primarily paints

the lush landscape of the Delaware Valley, with the scenery of New

Jersey’s Hunterdon and Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His work also features

a touch of maritime New England.

"To know this area does not only mean the landscape but also what

the territory means," says Williams. "Territory takes in weather,

terrain, home building styles, work life, peoples, lighting, and much

more."

Williams traces his artistic roots back to his childhood. A watercolor

painting of a tree and fence that he made for his grandmother when

he was 15 years old still hangs in his studio. After his Navy service

of four years, Williams earned his bachelor’s degree at the University

of New Haven in Connecticut. A 22-year career in retail management

was followed by his five year ownership of the Mercantile gallery

and coffee store.

Now, says Williams, he begins a new phase of his life, one that involves

more plein air painting and more time to devote to art.

Grand Opening, Papier Sun Art Gallery, 39 North

Main Street, Lambertville, 609-397-9022. Grand opening weekend for

John McDowell Williams. Saturday, July 19, 3 to 8 p.m. and Sunday,

July 20, noon to 5 p.m.<
