Dr. Mary Boname has always run Montgomery Eye Care as a preventive care optometric practice. Now, thanks to her own experiences and continuing education, she’s going to be able to offer even more.
Dr. Boname already carries MacuHealth, a supplement she’s been taking that contains patented nutrition of the three components found in the macula: lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. According to Dr. Boname, these help protect the macula to protect vision. It can only be purchased through a doctor’s office.
She also wears and recommends BluTech Lenses, which protect the eyes from blue radiation, the kind that comes from computers, smarthphones, and indoor lighting. Different from UV, studies have shown blue radiation impacts melatonin levels, which can impact sleep and cause chronic issues.
And because of her own family history, which includes stroke, cardiac disease, autoimmune diseases and cancers, Dr. Boname began to explore genetic testing, which brought her to nutraMetrix Custom Health Solutions. There she found a lifestyle genetic screening to seek improvements for overall health.
“You can’t change genetics, but you can modify risk factors,” Dr. Boname said. “I discuss with my patients strategies to reduce stress, add exercise, and improve nutrition, as well as supplements that are appropriate. With nutraMetrix, it’s a custom solution based on DNA testing. So many people take supplements; why not take one that makes a difference? I provide information, describe my results, and make recommendations.”
The death of her brother two years ago has had a lasting impact. She describes him as a big kid, someone who really squeezed every bit out of life. That experience reminds her “it behooves all of us to take care of ourselves and to make a plan to take care over time.”
Dr. Boname’s growing interest in wellness is in line with her preventive care optometric practice. She spends a lot of time with her patients, and they confide in her, which helps her best serve their needs.
“It’s not just a matter of taking care of a patient’s eyes,” she added. “It’s also doing thorough medical history every time they come in for an appointment and really listening.”
Dr. Boname considers it a privilege to care for people. She says it’s a labor of love to take care of patients, and she chose this job because of that, and because it continues to bond her with her grandfather, who was the only physician in his hometown for more than 60 years.
